Saturday Runners FAQ's
How fit do I need to be?
Saturday Runners has been designed to suit all abilities and types of runners. We have 3 levels of programmes:
Beginner: The runs we use for the Beginner group vary in length and range between 5-8 kms. You may need to use the walk/run technique to start with, that is cool!, we just want to help get you moving reguarly.
Intermediate: The Intermediate distances will range between 8-12km. The aim is to get you to run within a group that encourages you to be motivated and pushed a littly by having other runners around you.
Advanced: Advanced programme distances range between 10-14kms. The aim is to take you to a place where you don't normally go by yourself. There is something about a group atmosphere that encourages you to step outside your comfort zone and push you to another level within yourself.
How do I know what type of runner I am? Can I change programmes?
Check out our individual runner pages for Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. You should be able to identify with one of these groups. However, if you are unsure, when you start with Saturday Runners it will become clear very quickly which group suits you. You can change programmes during your sessions with Saturday Runners, the idea is to get you running at a level you are comfortable with and progressing from there.
Where do we start the runs from?
The runs will take place in and around Christchurch. We meet on Saturday mornings at 7.30am (sharp!! we leave on time!) at the location that is specified in the Monday email that you will receive outlining the run route.
You will receive an email the Monday before each run advising of meeting place. The start time will always be 7.30am and duration will be between 45mins - 1.5 hours depending on the distance.
How do the sessions work?
When you arrive at the meeting point, please arrive about 5-10mins early and "check in" with the coach taking the Saturday Runners roll call. We will have a key bag there for you to to put your car keys in for the duration of the run.
We then have a quick session briefing and send you on your way! Our coaches will rind on bikes around the group and be there to answer any questions you may have and help motivate you.
Depending on the distance you choose to run on the day, your "km" turnaround cones will be out on the course. The distance options are outlined in the weekly email. Example: if you are running 10km, you will turn around at the 5km marker. The majority of our courses are out and back courses. Occasionally you will be running to time, so you will need a watch, again details are outlined in the weekly newsletter.
At the end of the session we either have a coffee van come to us or we specify a cafe to go to after the run to catch up and have a goss ;o). These details are in the weekly newsletter that is emailed to you.
What do I need to bring to Saturday Runners?
You need to bring water, appropriate running attire and yourself! It's a good idea to check out the weather forecast the day before the run to make sure you bring the appropriate clothing. Sunscreen, hats and warm clothes are essential - as we all know, Christchurch weather can be unpredictable at times.
We do not have the facility to look after your gear at the runs, often there will not be anyone staying at the start/finish area during the run, so any water bottles/jackets/tops you leave there is at your own risk.
Also bring a watch as some of our runs are based on time not distance. It doesn't need to be flash, just one with a stopwatch function.
There is an optional coffee and catch up after each run at a cafe close to the run location, or we will often have a coffee van meet us after our session - they take EFTPOS.
IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE TO PARTICIPATE IN Saturday Runners?
Yes, the minimum age is 16 years old for any of our Extra Mile Runners programmes.
CAN I BRING MY baby or fur baby TO THE SESSIONS?
Sorry, no. In the interest of safety for all our runners (and we get a lot of runners at each session!), please leave your children and fur-babies at home.
What if it's raining?
Rain does not stop us! We will run in all kinds of weather. In the unlikely event of a snow blizzard in winter, keep an eye on your email and the Extra Mile Runners Facebook page as we'll contact you that way.
